Georgian Government Used Most of US Aid Money, Says Opposition Leader
Petre Tsiskarishvili is a leader of the opposition group “Unity – National Movement.” He recently spoke with journalists about how the Georgian government used money from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Tsiskarishvili said that most of the USAID funds, around 95%, were spent on things that benefited the government rather than the people. He pointed to the country’s judicial system as an example.
The government had promised to make the courts more independent and free from politics. But instead, Tsiskarishvili claimed that they became dependent on a wealthy businessman named Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Tsiskarishvili is skeptical of statements made by US Senator Marco Rubio. He thinks that the Americans will prioritize their own interests when it comes to spending money abroad.
