There are personal attacks on me and on other EU ambassadors, but at least on my part, I’m not taking this personally. I’m simply trying to do my job as good as I can, EU Ambassador Pawel Herczyński said in response to a question regarding criticism from high-ranking Georgian political officials.
According to him, the EU door is open to Georgia after December 2023, but instead of Georgia, as a formal candidate country, moving closer to the EU, it has drifted away.
“I will not comment on comments made by different politicians. This is not my job. My job is to present the position of the European Union. Yes, it’s very regrettable that the attacks on European Union continue. Actually, they even increased. It’s extremely regrettable. But as I just said in my speech, we are not going anywhere. We are to stay here. Our doors have been opened to Georgia since December 2023. Georgia is formally a candidate country for EU membership, and it’s up to the Georgian authorities to walk through this open doors. What we see since that historic moment of Georgia becoming a candidate country for the European Union is unfortunately precisely the opposite. Instead of Georgia getting closer to us, Georgia is drifting away. It’s very regrettable. Yes, as you said, there are personal attacks on me and on other EU ambassadors, but at least on my part, I’m not taking this personally. I’m simply trying to do my job as good as I can,” said Herczyński.
