The Parliament unanimously supported the legislative package in the third reading by 81 votes, according to which, specific individuals will be prohibited from party activities, the right to hold political office and participate in elections.
The amendments were reflected in the Organic Law “On the Constitutional Court”, the Organic Law “On Political Unions of Citizens”, the “Election Code” and the “Criminal Code”.
According to the legislative amendments, if a specific party is banned by the decision of the Constitutional Court, members of the banned party and persons associated with it will not be able to exercise their passive electoral rights – they will no longer be able to be elected to Parliament or municipalities. At the same time, their right to hold leadership positions in constitutional bodies will be restricted, and they will no longer be able to become members of other parties. They will also not be able to become donors to other parties.
In addition, a party that admits such individuals to its ranks will be held liable under the Criminal Code, in particular, will be fined.
As stated in the ruling team, after the new legislative amendments come into force, the Georgian Dream team will appeal to the Constitutional Court and demand both the banning of specific parties and the prohibition of the above-mentioned rights for individuals associated with them.
