**Half of Gaza’s Houses Destroyed**
Palestinians are facing their worst fears in the north of Gaza. The area has been severely damaged since October 2023.
A man named Adham Bartawi returned to his home in al-Zahra city and found that half of it was gone. He said, “It looks like it was bulldozed.” Many people are returning to their homes only to find them destroyed or badly damaged.
The UN estimates that about 70% of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or demolished since October 2023. The worst destruction has occurred in the north. This means that many people will be homeless and need aid.
**Aid is Coming In**
Basic aid supplies, such as food, water, and shelter, are starting to arrive in Gaza. However, it’s still a massive effort ahead of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa).
Acting director Sam Rose said, “We’re providing food, water, basic shelter supplies, and some monitoring to particularly vulnerable cases.” Many people are preparing to travel from south to north Gaza by foot or vehicle.
**A Long Road Ahead**
Many people are struggling to access aid. A man named Ihab Qraqeh is waiting for a car so he can pack and go with his family. Another couple turned back because the road was too long and their wife was heavily pregnant.
The UN estimates that the population of northern Gaza will double in the next few days. This means that many people will be competing for limited resources, making it even harder to access aid.
**More Aid Needed**
As people return to their homes, they’re finding total devastation. Many are preparing to travel from south to north Gaza, but the road ahead is long and difficult.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) needs more support to provide aid to those in need. The situation in Gaza is dire, and it’s going to take a lot of effort to rebuild the area.
