**OSCE Calls on Georgian Government to Respect Democracy and European Integration**
In a move that highlights growing concerns over Georgia’s democratic backslide, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly has adopted a resolution urging the country’s government to respect democratic values and engage with European integration.
The resolution, passed on July 3 during the Assembly’s annual session in Porto, Portugal, calls on the Georgian Dream government to de-escalate tensions, respect freedoms of assembly and expression, refrain from using force against peaceful protesters, and return to the path of European integration. The move is a clear sign of international concern over Georgia’s drift away from democratic norms.
**Support for Civil Society and EU Integration**
The resolution reaffirms the Assembly’s support for Georgian civil society and their aspirations for EU membership. It also expresses strong backing for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. This is a significant development, as it reflects international concern over Russia’s recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.
**Concerns Over Repressive Actions**
The resolution follows increasing concerns about the GD government’s repressive actions, including its turn away from the EU path, arrests and physical assaults of peaceful demonstrators during protests in November and December 2024, raids on opposition offices, passage of controversial laws, and imprisonment of political opponents and journalists.
**Election Concerns**
In particular, the Assembly expressed deep concern over Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections, citing widespread violations documented by the OSCE/ODIHR and what it called “an unprecedented use of administrative resources” that undermines the principles of freedom, equality, and the legitimacy of election results.
**Condemnation of Force Against Peaceful Protesters**
The resolution strongly condemned the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters, who are standing firm for the European and democratic future of Georgia. It also expressed concern over politically motivated prosecutions of journalists, activists, and opposition figures.
**Growing Tensions with EU and Russia**
The Assembly voiced disappointment over newly adopted laws on “foreign agents,” “radio and television,” and “grants,” saying the authorities are using all means possible to consolidate power. It also expressed deep concern about rising anti-EU rhetoric and growing ties with Russia and China, calling these developments completely unacceptable and inconsistent with Georgia’s stated goal of EU integration.
In summary, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s resolution is a strong call for the Georgian government to respect democratic values, engage in dialogue, and return to the path of European integration.
