**Hungary’s Orban Demands EU Changes**
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made a list of demands to the European Union, including not letting Ukraine join the bloc. This is not surprising, as Orban has been against helping Ukraine in the past.
On March 15, Orban listed 12 demands on his social media account X. He wants peace, freedom, and unity in Europe. However, he also wants some things that might be hard for others to accept.
**What does Hungary want?**
Orban’s list includes:
* Banning “unnatural re-education” of children
* Protecting “Europe’s Christian heritage”
* Having peace in Europe
* And not letting Ukraine join the EU
**EU Sanctions on Russia**
Just days before Orban made his demands, the EU agreed to renew sanctions on Russia. This was after Hungary lifted its veto on the renewal. However, the EU only removed four individuals from the list of people who would be sanctioned.
This might lead to another confrontation between the EU and Hungary in July when economic sanctions against Russia are up for extension.
**Ukraine’s EU Membership**
Ukraine applied for EU membership in 2022 and was granted candidate status soon after. Accession talks began in June 2024, with a target date of 2030 for Ukraine to join the EU.
