One of the main issues at the opening of the autumn session of Parliament will be the election of Mamuka Mdinaradze as the head of the State Security Service.
Initially, the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues will establish the validity of the application on the resignation of Anri Okhanashvili from the position of the head of the State Security Service and will present the relevant conclusion at the upcoming plenary session of Parliament. At the plenary session, Parliament will take note of the information on Okhanashvili’s voluntary resignation and, accordingly, the early termination of his powers.
After that, the new head of the State Security Service will be elected, for which Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze nominated the majority leader, the chairman of the Georgian Dream faction, Mamuka Mdinaradze.
In accordance with the Law on the State Security Service and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the Parliament elects the Head of the State Security Service by a majority of its members for a term of 6 years.
Anri Okhanashvili, who assumed the position of Head of the State Security Service in April of this year, resigned from his position on August 23. The State Security Service issued a statement on Okhanashvili’s behalf regarding his resignation.
According to Prime Minister Kobakhidze, Okhanashvili will be his advisor on national security issues.
