**US Envoy Secretly Tasked to End Ukraine War**
Steve Witkoff, a special envoy to the Middle East under President Donald Trump, has been given a new task: helping to negotiate an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was reported by The New York Times on February 11.
According to sources, Trump directed Witkoff weeks ago to expand his role and help with the Ukraine peace process. This comes as Trump has already appointed retired general Keith Kellogg as special envoy for Ukraine and Russia.
**Witkoff’s Role**
Witkoff is a real estate billionaire and close friend of Trump. He flew to Russia on his private jet to secure the release of imprisoned American teacher Marc Fogel, which was announced by the White House on February 11. Witkoff also spoke with allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin before his visit.
The NYT reported that Witkoff has discussed Ukraine with contacts in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. However, it is unclear what authority Witkoff has regarding the Ukraine-Russia peace process.
**US Efforts to End War**
This news comes as US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz called the deal to release Fogel an “exchange” and a sign of progress toward ending the war in Ukraine. Trump has repeatedly pledged to broker a swift peace deal to end the full-scale war, now nearing its third year.
Kellogg is set to visit Ukraine on February 20 and is reportedly preparing several options for a ceasefire deal to be presented to the White House.
