Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association Chairperson Speaks Out

Nona Kurdovanidze, the head of the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA), has spoken out against a statement made by Russia’s intelligence service. The service claimed that the European Union is willing to pay Georgian youth €120 per day to participate in anti-government protests.

According to Nona Kurdovanidze, this statement was made to discredit the European Union and the ideas that are part of Georgia’s Constitution. She believes that Russian propaganda is spreading false information, which then spreads within the Georgian space through various channels.

This, she says, confirms the crisis that the country is facing. There is no meaningful discussion about how Georgia can become a member of the European Union in the near future. Instead, everything revolves around how the ruling “Georgian Dream” party can maintain its power despite massive protests against it and a legitimacy problem with the Parliament.

At an event titled “Georgia and the European Union: Now What?”, Nona Kurdovanidze stated that the “Georgian Dream” has openly said that the EU integration process has been halted. This, she says, is why talking about Georgia moving towards the EU is unnecessary. The current situation in Georgia is characterized by daily deterioration in legislative regulations and worsening independence of institutions.

Nona Kurdovanidze believes that the way out of this crisis is to hold new elections and release political prisoners. This is what the people demand during street protests, she said.
