**Ukraine’s Clever Tactic: Rebooting the Trojan Horse**
In a surprise move, Ukraine has successfully reinvented the ancient tactic of using the Trojan Horse to gain an upper hand in its war against Russia. According to NATO Admiral Pierre Vandier, this clever ploy was showcased during Operation Spiderweb inside Russian territory.
The operation involved hiding high-tech first-person view (FPV) drones inside trucks deep within Russia before launching a surprise attack. The outcome was devastating: 41 aircraft were damaged or destroyed, including two of Russia’s primary platforms for missile attacks against Ukraine. This daring move caused approximately $7 billion in damage and disabled one-third of Russia’s cruise missile bombers.
**A Modern Twist on an Ancient Tactic**
Admiral Vandier compared this Ukrainian tactic to the original Trojan Horse, used thousands of years ago by the Greeks to infiltrate the city of Troy. “Today, we see this kind of tactic being reinvented by technical and industrial creativity,” he said in an interview with AFP.
Vandier emphasized that NATO needs to quickly master new technologies to stay ahead of Russia’s looming threat. However, he also stressed that drones are not a silver bullet and must be complemented with traditional equipment. “No one in the military sphere will tell you that we can do without what we’ll call traditional equipment,” Vandier said.
**Ukraine’s Pioneering Use of Drones**
Ukraine has been at the forefront of drone technology, introducing various models for combat and reconnaissance missions during Russia’s full-scale war. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Ukrainian soldiers destroyed over 89,000 Russian targets using drones in May alone.
Kyiv is also working to scale up domestic production and develop long-range missile-drone hybrids, such as the Palianytsia and Peklo models. By the end of 2024, Ukraine had developed a total of 324 new types of weapons, according to the Ministry of Strategic Industries.

The Ukrainian operation showcases the evolving nature of modern warfare. As Admiral Vandier noted, drones are not omnipotent but can be highly effective when used in conjunction with traditional equipment.
