**New Director Named for Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health**
After a nearly three-year vacancy, Irakli Purtseladze has been appointed as the new director of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC). This decision comes as a relief to those concerned about the future of public health in Georgia.
Purtseladze takes over from Amiran Gamkrelidze, who stepped down in August 2022. Following his resignation, First Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia briefly held the position on an acting basis before being succeeded by NCDC Deputy Director Paata Imnadze.
Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze welcomed Purtseladze to the role, highlighting the new director’s “professional experience and management skills” as key assets in strengthening Georgia’s public health system. This appointment is significant, considering the challenges the country has faced in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
**Background on Irakli Purtseladze**
Before taking on this role, Irakli Purtseladze worked at Aversi, Georgia’s largest pharmaceutical company, from 2002 to 2024. During his tenure there, he served as General Director from 2011 to 2013. He also had experience leading the supervisory board of Alfa Insurance Company from 2016 to 2018.
**Challenges Ahead**
The NCDC has faced significant challenges in recent years, particularly with the adoption of Georgia’s Foreign Agents Law in 2024. This law led to a suspension of foreign funds, affecting several sectors, including health. The National Center for Disease Control and the Lugar Laboratory were among those affected, with $95 million cut from U.S. aid.
Health Minister Sarjveladze acknowledged this situation but downplayed its impact on the NCDC’s operations. However, many are watching closely to see how the new director will navigate these challenges and ensure that the public health system remains strong and effective in Georgia.
