**Germany Weighs Decision to Supply Powerful Cruise Missiles to Ukraine**
In a recent statement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that the country is still considering whether to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. However, he emphasized that Germany will not become a party to the war. This announcement comes as Ukrainian forces continue to face significant challenges in their fight against Russia.
According to Merz, the decision to supply Taurus missiles remains under consideration due to the complexity of the system and the need for extensive training before Ukrainian forces can operate it. He noted that this process takes at least six months, and it is unclear whether training has already begun. The chancellor also mentioned that he discussed this issue with President Volodymyr Zelensky and within the coalition.
**What are Taurus Missiles?**
Taurus missiles are powerful cruise missiles capable of striking targets at a distance of 500 kilometers (300 miles). This makes them more effective than some other long-range weapons Ukraine has received from its allies. The key difference between Taurus and other similar missiles, such as the Storm Shadow, lies in their warhead design. Taurus can be programmed to detonate after penetrating fortified targets like bunkers or reinforced facilities.
**Germany’s Military Support to Ukraine**
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany has provided significant military support to Kyiv. This aid includes approximately 47.8 billion euros (about $51.8 billion) in total bilateral support, making Germany Ukraine’s second-largest country donor. The majority of this support is focused on military equipment and humanitarian assistance.
**Why the Secrecy?**
In an effort to prevent Moscow from assessing the full scope of Western assistance, Germany has decided not to publicly disclose details about its military support to Ukraine anymore. This decision aims to maintain a strategic advantage in the conflict.
