**Former Ukrainian Official Shot Dead in Madrid**
A former top official in Ukraine’s government was shot dead by unknown attackers in Madrid, Spain. Andriy Portnov, a lawyer and politician, was killed outside the American School in Madrid on May 21. According to Reuters, Portnov was shot five times – once in the head and four times in the back.
**Who Was Andriy Portnov?**
Portnov served in the administration of Ukraine’s former President Viktor Yanukovych between 2010 and 2014. After the EuroMaidan Revolution, which ousted Yanukovych from power, Portnov lived between Ukraine and other countries abroad. In 2021, he was sanctioned by the United States for his alleged involvement in corruption, particularly in the judiciary.
**The Attack**
Portnov was driving a Mercedes car when he was attacked by two or three people. The shooting occurred at around 9:15 am local time, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais. Emergency services found Portnov dead upon their arrival. The motive for the attack is not yet clear, but debt issues have been suggested as a possible reason.
**Investigation Underway**
