**EU Sanctions on Russia Hit Roadblock: Slovakia Blocks 18th Package**
The European Union’s (EU) efforts to impose new sanctions on Russia have been put on hold due to opposition from Slovakia. In a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives on July 9, EU ambassadors failed to approve the bloc’s 18th package of sanctions against Russia, as Slovakia continued to block the measures.
**Unanimous Backing Required**
To implement new sanctions, the EU requires unanimous backing from all member countries. Unfortunately for the EU, Slovakia’s opposition has stalled the adoption of this latest package. Hungary had also previously opposed the draft sanctions in late June, but it seems that Bratislava’s concerns have not been fully addressed.
**Talks Between Slovakia and European Commission**
According to reports by European Pravda, Slovakia’s position on the sanctions package remains unchanged despite “good and productive” talks between Bratislava and the European Commission on July 3. Unlike Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has consistently opposed sanctions and military aid for Ukraine, Slovakia had not previously tried to block new EU measures.
**Financial Implications of RePowerEU**
Slovakia’s primary concern is related to the financial implications of RePowerEU – an initiative aimed at ending reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2030. Bratislava has asked for a delay in adopting the latest package until the EU clarifies these costs. The sanctions package will be discussed again at a meeting scheduled for July 11, with sources suggesting that a final agreement is expected this week.
**New Restrictions and Bans**
The 18th package of sanctions includes new restrictions on Russia’s energy and banking sectors, as well as bans on transactions connected to the Nord Stream pipeline project. These measures are part of the EU’s broader effort to increase economic pressure on Moscow as the Kremlin rejects calls for an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.
**US Sanctions Update**
While the EU advances its sanctions framework, the United States has not introduced any new sanctions on Russia since President Donald Trump took office in January. The lack of US action may be attributed to changing priorities and diplomatic efforts at play. However, the international community remains vigilant in addressing Russian aggression in Ukraine.
