**Europe Needs Strong Defense Plan, Macron Says**
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a “massive defense plan” to face the growing threat from Russia. He made this statement in a social media live feed on February 20.
Macron’s comments come ahead of his planned visit to Washington, D.C., where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss peace negotiations in Ukraine. Macron plans to tell Trump that “you can’t be weak with President Putin.” He believes that being strong is not only good for the U.S., but also in the interest of the world.
**Macron Criticizes Russia**
Macron has been rallying European leaders to discuss European and Ukrainian security. He slammed Russia as a “dangerous military power that has become imperialist.” Macron said that Russia had “globalized” the war in Ukraine by bringing in North Korean troops, and warned that a worldwide conflict is not off the table.
**Europe Needs a Stronger Defense Plan**
Macron called on Europe to come together to create a strong defense plan for the continent. He suggested that Europe can work together to create joint defense capabilities and autonomy from the U.S. However, he clarified that Europe will not form a common army.
**Supporting Ukraine**
Regarding Ukraine, France is open to providing Kyiv with security guarantees, including deploying peacekeeping forces to monitor a potential ceasefire. Macron said that France is ready to consider sending experts or even a limited number of troops beyond the front line to demonstrate solidarity and help Ukraine defend itself.
Macron also suggested supporting NATO membership for Ukraine as one way to support Ukraine in its battle against Russia’s aggression.
