France Plans to Deploy Nuclear-Armed Fighter Jets Near German Border
France will deploy its newest fighter jets with nuclear warheads near the border with Germany by 2035, French President Emmanuel Macron announced. This move comes as the US is shifting its focus away from Europe and Ukraine.
The new Rafale fighter jets can fly at supersonic speeds and have a short takeoff distance of just 400 meters. Two new squadrons will be stationed in Luxeuil-Saint-Sauveur, which will receive a major upgrade with funding of €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion). The airbase near the town of Luxeuil-les-Bains will also host around 2,000 military and civilian personnel by 2035.
This move is seen as a response to Russia’s growing influence in Europe. Western leaders have warned about the threat from Russia, and intelligence agencies predict that a large-scale war could be launched on Europe within five years.
The French government has decided to increase orders for Rafale fighter jets amid shifting geopolitical realities. This decision is part of France’s ongoing modernization of its nuclear deterrent.
