It is a fact that “Georgian Dream” has additional serious problems in the penitentiary system – the statement released by the penitentiary service is shameful, as once again the blame is being shifted onto the victim, – said one of the leaders of the “United National Movement,” Levan Sanikidze, in response to the personnel changes within the penitentiary service.
According to him, the chaos that exists in various state institutions has now extended into the penitentiary system as well.
“It is a fact that ‘Georgian Dream’ has additional serious problems in the penitentiary institutions. But based on recent developments, it is impossible that this is not connected to Giorgi Bachiashvili, since the penitentiary service released a statement suggesting that certain employees and prisoners under their influence might have been acting in coordination with Giorgi Bachiashvili. This is a shameful statement, in which once again the penitentiary service shifts the blame onto the victim. Consequently, the chaos that exists in the judicial system, the prosecutor’s office, and the government vertical has naturally spread into the penitentiary service.
These personnel changes look so delicate that they are forced to bring back former officials into the penitentiary system. This is a clear example that the ‘Georgian Dream’ vertical is seriously shaken, and this is naturally connected to the protests, as well as the external and internal pressures that exist – regarding political prisoners and against the rule of ‘Georgian Dream,’” – said Levan Sanikidze.
For context, according to the Special Penitentiary Service, the head of the service, Bejan Obgaidze, resigned on the basis of a personal statement.
The statement noted that this decision was preceded by the resignation of the head of Penitentiary Establishment No. 8, D. Gogoberishvili, and the deputy director of the penitentiary department of the Special Penitentiary Service, G. Kemoklidze.
The agency explained that within the framework of disciplinary proceedings, several individuals were questioned, including the head of Establishment No. 8, employees of the institution and the Special Penitentiary Service, convict G. Bachiashvili, convict K. Metreveli, as well as other convicts who might have had any kind of contact with convict Bachiashvili.
“As a result of the inspection, the circumstances revealed at this stage give reasonable grounds to suspect that certain employees of the Special Penitentiary Service, prisoners under their influence, and convict G. Bachiashvili might have been acting in coordination,” – reads the statement released by the penitentiary service on August 21.
