The “Nats” [National Movement] caused a commotion because they knew neither Melia nor their candidate could become the unified opposition candidate, said Levan Gogichaishvili, one of the leaders of “Gakharia for Georgia,” during an appearance on PalitraNews’ program “Resume.”
According to Levan Gogichaishvili, there was a candidate on whom agreement was entirely possible—Salome Zurabishvili.
“There was a 150% chance of winning Tbilisi if other parties had participated and we had a unified candidate. I understand why the four [parties] caused a commotion. I understand the reason for their boycott—it’s simple and pragmatic. They realized that Melia couldn’t be the unified candidate, and they had no other interest in the local elections. If Melia had been their candidate, their party would have been the first to declare participation in the elections.
There was a candidate on whom agreement could have been reached; it would have been very straightforward to agree on Salome Zourabichvili. Zurabishvili would have accepted the offer if she was convinced that she was the candidate of all four political organizations. This was absolutely achievable,” Gogichaishvili stated.
Levan Gogichaishvili also commented on the confrontation that took place on September 8 on Melikishvili Avenue near Kakha Kaladze’s election headquarters between “Georgian Dream” supporters and protest participants.
According to Gogichaishvili’s assessment, the organized crowd that confronted the protesters was orchestrated by “Georgian Dream.”
“Yesterday, they poured fuel on the protest in the literal sense. Whether someone likes it or not, these people came to express their opinions. Some may have crossed ethical boundaries, but the fact that an organized crowd was brought in to confront and attack women was entirely staged from start to finish…
