Opposition Protests Continue in Georgia
A protest rally took place near the Parliament building in Georgia. The protesters are demanding the release of Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of Netgazeti, who is on a hunger strike.
Levan Gogichaishvili, a member of the opposition party “For Georgia”, spoke at the rally. He expressed concern about Mzia’s health and urged her to stop the hunger strike. He said that the country needs her alive and that there could be irreversible consequences if she continues.
Gogichaishvili also talked about the ongoing protests in the country. He said that Parliament has resumed work, but protesters are not going inside and do not consider it legitimate. The protests have been going on for 69 days.
He called on the government to hold new elections to solve the political crisis. He said that if new elections were held, the government would no longer be able to use the same voting scheme as in the October 2024 parliamentary elections.
Gogichaishvili stated that opposition voters pay a lot of taxes, and these funds could be used for elections. He accused the government of stealing money meant for elections every month through bureaucratic means.
The opposition party “For Georgia” is one of several groups protesting against the government. They are disputing the results of the last parliamentary election, in which their party received fewer seats than expected.
