What we are now forced to witness in Georgia is the collapse not only of European values, but of European civilization as a whole, – German MP from the Christian Democratic Party, Knut Abraham, said at the briefing in Strasbourg.
According to him, the persecution of the opposition, the arrest of their leaders, is simply unacceptable and absolutely inadmissible. According to the German MP, the main thing is fair and free elections and the immediate release of all political prisoners.
“When I think back on my visits to Georgia, it always appears to me as a country deeply rooted in European civilization. But I must say – what we are now forced to witness is the collapse not only of European values, but also of European civilization as a whole. The persecution of the opposition, the imprisonment of their leaders – is simply unacceptable, absolutely inadmissible, especially from a member state of the Council of Europe.
As a German, I have always been proud of German-Georgian relations, not only because we are close to each other alphabetically; I have always felt how deep the friendship between these two countries is, and I would like to express my gratitude for the Georgian-German Friendship March, which we saw yesterday.
I would like to emphasize once again what my colleagues have already said – the main thing is fair and free elections, and the immediate release of all political prisoners,” said the German parliamentarian.
