**Strong Protection for Democracies: A Lesson from Georgia and Ukraine**

In a powerful speech at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that democracies need strong protection to ensure peace. She cited two examples of democratic countries that have faced aggression – Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine since 2014.

Kallas noted that agreements alone cannot guarantee peace. “Ukraine learned this in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea,” she said. “And now, after three years of full-scale war with Russia.” She stressed that the answer to stopping Russian aggression lies within the EU’s hands. “The strongest guarantee of security is a strong Ukraine,” Kallas stated.

**A Call for Action**

Kallas’ speech was marked by a sense of urgency and determination. She called on the international community to take decisive action against Russia, particularly in terms of economic pressure. “We must also increase the pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield today,” she said. Citing the sanctions package presented last week, Kallas emphasized that measures are being taken to hold Russia accountable.

**A Deadline for Change**

Kallas set a clear deadline for Russia to change its behavior – 2027. By then, the EU aims to cut energy ties with Russia completely. This move is expected to have significant economic implications for Russia, further isolating the country from the global community.

**Supporting Ukraine’s Defense**

In addition to economic pressure, Kallas announced a substantial allocation of €1 billion for the Ukrainian defense industry. This support will not only help strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities but also provide additional military assistance to the country. As she noted, “When the war is over, it must be over forever.” The EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense is a significant step towards ensuring that peace becomes a lasting reality.
