US Congress Leader Calls for Sanctions on Georgian Businessman
The chairman of the US Helsinki Commission, Congressman Joe Wilson, has asked the UK to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili. Ivanishvili is a businessman and honorary chairman of “Georgian Dream”, a political party in Georgia.
Congressman Wilson made this request on his social media account X. He called Ivanishvili a friend of the Chinese Communist Party, and asked for him to be sanctioned along with his family members and those who support him.
The move is likely to cause tension between the US and Georgian governments. “Georgian Dream” has ruled Georgia since 2012. Congressman Wilson also mentioned that he is grateful to serve as co-chair of the Congressional UK Group, which suggests a strong connection between him and British leaders.
