**Ukraine Denies Russian Claims of Blocking POW and KIA Body Exchange**
The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war has taken another turn, with Russia accusing Ukraine of refusing to engage in a prisoner of war (POW) exchange and body repatriation effort. However, Ukrainian officials have denied these claims, saying that no official date had yet been agreed upon for the exchange.
According to reports from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian officials, including Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky, GRU Deputy Chief Alexander Zorin, and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, publicly accused Ukraine of refusing to participate in the exchange. They claimed that Russia was prepared to hand over severely wounded and sick POWs, those under the age of 25, and approximately 6,000 bodies of killed-in-action soldiers as agreed upon in Istanbul on June 2.
However, the Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of POWs has refuted these claims, stating that no date had yet been set for the repatriation and that lists for the POW exchange were still being finalized between both sides. The headquarters emphasized Ukraine’s “full commitment” to constructive engagement aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of both agreements.
**Russia’s Motivations**
So, what might be behind Russia’s claims? According to ISW, Moscow is likely trying to promote narratives that vilify Ukraine and discredit it on the international stage. “It remains committed to promoting narratives that vilify Ukraine,” ISW said in their report. “This effort is likely aimed at softening public opinion and preparing the ground for future steps such as rejecting a proposed peace agreement or declaring ‘peace was impossible’.”
In other words, Russia may be using this propaganda campaign to deflect blame and justify its own actions, while also attempting to undermine Ukraine’s legitimacy and international standing.
