“Relations between states are not conducted through open letters. This is a form of internal political communication that exists between opponents. Open letters to the government are written to shame them about something, but I don’t recall such a form in interstate relations. If you want to clarify something, there are always diplomatic channels. An open letter is the result of the fact that, apparently, no one is communicating with them through diplomatic channels anymore,” said political analyst Irakli Melashvili on the PalitraNews program Resume, commenting on the open letter published by Mikheil Kavelashvili addressed to Trump.
According to Melashvili, these are the first years in Georgia’s history when the country has neither friendly nations nor partners.
“The problem is precisely that Trump maintains relations with everyone, not just Trump, but also China—our strategic partner (as they declare themselves our strategic partner), as well as all our neighbors—Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia—were invited… The only country from the region that was not invited is Georgia.
They wrote to Trump, claiming we share common values… This is a party that, three years ago, was aligning itself with the Socialist International, which Trump calls crazy communists. They tell Trump we share common values, and now Americans are supposed to believe this. I understand that domestically, this kind of audacity works because a part of our society is so gripped by Soviet nostalgia that they swallow everything. But to think that Americans will believe you share any common values when, two years ago, you were claiming to be socialists, and now you’re a radical right-winger, claiming to defend family values and oppose minorities, when they have laws protecting minorities… The only thing they are proving to the world is that their true ideology is opportunism and chameleon-like behavior. Because of this, they are neither pro-Chinese, nor pro-Russian, nor pro-American, nor pro-European, and in the end, they’ve angered everyone.
These are the first years in Georgia’s history when we not only have no friendly countries but also no partners at all. This government has managed to ensure that we no longer have any partner states,” Melashvili stated.
