If today the average salary is 2 thousand GEL for the highest-ranking professors, we believe that the minimum salary for a full-time professor should be 10 thousand GEL, to which should be added the royalties that professors will receive for various activities, – Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated this during the presentation of the education reform.
As the head of government noted, the main core of universities should be full-time professors.
“Every direction should have one leader, one head, one full professor, with whom 2-3 associate professors and more than 10 assistant professors will work, and this is how the core of professors and teachers in universities should be formed, and this process will give us, including them, the opportunity to create better conditions for professors and teachers. If today the average salary is 2 thousand GEL, for higher-ranking professors, we think that the minimum salary of a full-time professor should be 10 thousand GEL, to which should be added the royalties that professors will receive for various activities such as preparing textbooks, preparing articles, etc. All this ensures a qualitative improvement in the quality of the higher education system.
As for other teachers, they may have specific statuses, but they should be employed in universities on an hourly basis and with much lower salaries. The emphasis should be on full-time professors,” the Prime Minister said.
Also, during the presentation of the education reform, Kobakhidze noted that the challenge is the weak connection between teaching and research, as well as the lack of modern standards, curricula and textbooks.
He also said that the share of research in the university system is meager, which can be easily corrected, for this a functioning system is needed.
