Unfortunately, ambassadors from the European Union often blatantly violate principles and rules. This is unacceptable. In Georgia, an ambassador should behave as befits an ambassador, not as a politician – not everyone behaves like the ambassadors of the European Union, Britain, and Germany, thank God – this is how Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze responded to journalists about the summoning of the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and Germany to Georgia by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Prime Minister, he hopes that the ambassadors will return to diplomatic frameworks.
“Everyone sees that specific ambassadors are directly involved in political processes, which is a gross violation of the principle of democracy. This is a violation of the principle of the Vienna Convention. This requires a response. This is a normal diplomatic measure. We hope that the ambassadors will return to the diplomatic framework. They must follow the rules, they must follow the principles. This is, among other things, the European approach, ambassadors cannot act with Soviet approaches. Summoning them is a diplomatic measure, the sole purpose of which is for the ambassadors to return to the diplomatic framework. Do you remember Macron’s statement about one of the ambassadors? He made a much milder statement, he did not mean to interfere much in French politics, the French President immediately reacted. Here, not only is there direct, crude interference in politics, but also incitement to radicalism and polarization.
I want to remind you of the direct interference in electoral processes. The EU ambassador came out and directly called on voters to mobilize against the government. There can be no more blatant violation of the Vienna Convention that this. This is one of the blatant examples. There are many examples of this. You also remember that ambassadors went directly to court proceedings in order to influence the work of judges, which is a blatant violation of the Convention. Ambassadors representing Europe should not behave like this.
Europe has traditionally been a symbol of rules, a symbol of respect for rules. Now, unfortunately, ambassadors from the European Union often blatantly violate principles and rules, this is unacceptable. An ambassador in Georgia should behave as befits an ambassador, not as a politician,” the Prime Minister noted.
As the Prime Minister noted, there are serious problems in the European bureaucracy, and what ambassadors do is a reflection of this.
“All ambassadors represent a state, and when you summon an ambassador, you are using a kind of diplomatic measure towards the state, this is logical. An ambassador does not act independently. We say that the European bureaucracy is in a difficult situation today, and this applies not only to the structures of the European Union, but also to the structures of the respective states. There are serious problems in the European bureaucracy, and what ambassadors do is a reflection of this,” the Prime Minister noted.
For information, today, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom was summoned to the Foreign Ministry. The British Ambassador is the second diplomat to be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Yesterday, the German Ambassador, Peter Fischer, was at the Foreign Ministry.
