Georgian Parliament Approves “Treason Against the Homeland” Article.
A bill to reinstate an article in the country’s criminal code has been approved by parliament. The article, number 307¹, deals with treason against Georgia.
The vote was 85 in favor of the bill. This means that certain actions considered as treason will be regulated and punished under this new provision.
These actions include harming Georgia’s territory, making deals with foreign powers without permission, or working with a foreign country to hurt Georgia’s security. They also include joining a foreign spy agency, sabotaging Georgia’s military, or helping a foreign power in any way that could harm the country.
It’s worth noting that all these actions are already punishable under other laws in Georgia’s criminal code. This new article simply groups them together and makes it clear what is considered treason against the homeland.
The bill was proposed by lawmakers from two main parties: “Georgian Dream” and “Power of the People”.
