**EU Steps Up Pressure on Hungary and Slovakia Over Pro-Russia Stance**

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a tougher stance against Hungary and Slovakia, two European Union member states that have been consistently obstructing the bloc’s sanctions against Russia. According to a report by NTV, Merz warned that if these countries continue to block EU efforts, they could face serious consequences.

**A Divided Europe**

The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war has created deep divisions within the EU. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Instead, he has pushed for peace talks that would essentially solidify Moscow’s control over occupied territories. Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico has also been a key pro-Russian leader within the EU, regularly blocking or weakening sanctions against Russia.

**Merz Speaks Out**

Speaking at the WDR-Europaforum on May 26, Merz made it clear that he will not tolerate further obstruction from these two countries. He emphasized that both Hungary and Slovakia represent only a small minority among the 27 EU member states, yet have used their veto powers to block or weaken sanctions.

“We cannot allow the decisions of the entire European Union to depend on a small minority,” Merz stated firmly.

**Pressure Tools at Hand**

Merz highlighted various pressure tools available to the EU, including infringement proceedings for rule-of-law violations and the suspension of EU funding. In his words, “there is always the option of withdrawing European funds from them.” While he emphasized that he does not seek conflict, he made it clear that if necessary, the EU will take action against these countries.

**A Conversation with Orbán**

Interestingly, Merz had spoken directly with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just a week before making his public statement. This private conversation may have signaled an attempt to resolve the issue amicably, but ultimately, Merz’s words suggest that the EU is prepared to take more serious measures.

**What’s Next?**

As the EU continues to navigate the complex landscape of Russian aggression and internal divisions, it remains to be seen how Hungary and Slovakia will respond to the increased pressure. Will they finally align themselves with the rest of the bloc, or will they continue to defy the EU’s efforts?
