A Week of Shaking Things Up
The US and Russia have had a week of major changes in their relationship. This started with a phone call between leaders Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on February 12th.
Since then, they’ve met in Saudi Arabia for high-level talks. This is the first time their top officials have spoken face-to-face since Russia invaded Ukraine.
The meeting has caused big problems for Europe and Ukraine. They’re worried about their security and what this means for their countries.
Russian media are very happy with these developments. They’re saying that Western efforts to punish Russia over the war in Ukraine haven’t worked.
A newspaper, Moskovsky Komsomolets, wrote that Trump will have to make concessions to Russia because they’re winning in Ukraine. It said Europe and Ukraine would be the ones to suffer.
But on the streets of Moscow, people are taking a more cautious view. They’re waiting to see if these changes will really help them and end the war in Ukraine.
One person told me that Trump is just interested in making money, not changing things for Russia. Another said they dream that the negotiations might bring peace and improve their economy.
A presidential summit between Putin and Trump is expected soon. But only time will tell what this means for world politics.
