**British Embassy’s Interference in Georgian Politics Sparks Outrage**
The British Embassy’s recent statement on social media has sparked a heated debate in Georgia, with one parliamentarian accusing the embassy of interfering in internal affairs and insulting the Georgian people.
According to MP Guram Macharashvili, the embassy’s statement is nothing short of an insult. “When an embassy funds violent protests against the government and at the same time lectures the local authorities, it has nothing to do with European values,” he said. The comment was made in response to a recent statement from the British Embassy, which claimed that the Georgian Dream government had distanced itself from Euro-Atlantic cooperation.
Macharashvili pointed out that the embassy’s funding of organizations involved in violent protests and revolutionary movements is not only an interference in internal affairs but also a breach of diplomatic protocol. “It is not the role of an embassy to interfere in politics or internal state matters,” he emphasized.
**A Breach of Diplomatic Protocol**
The Georgian MP questioned why the British Embassy felt it necessary to comment on Georgia’s internal affairs, particularly when they are involved in funding organizations that have been accused of violent protests. “They must answer for the insulting statements they’ve made and explain why they’re funding groups that are actively working against the government,” Macharashvili said.
The statement from the British Embassy has been seen as an attempt to influence Georgia’s internal politics, rather than respecting its sovereignty. Macharashvili argued that the embassy should first address these concerns before making any further statements. “Only after they’ve answered our questions can they claim the right to issue any kind of statement,” he said.
**A Blow to European Values?**
Macharashvili also questioned whether the British Embassy’s actions align with European values, particularly in light of their funding of violent protests. “When you’re an embassy and you fund violent protests against a government, and at the same time try to lecture a national government that has been elected by the people, this has absolutely nothing to do with European values,” he said.
The incident has sparked concerns about the role of foreign embassies in Georgia’s internal affairs. As Macharashvili pointed out, it is not the business of an embassy to interfere in politics or internal state matters. The British Embassy’s statement has been met with widespread criticism, with many seeing it as a direct insult to the Georgian people.
