According to Giorgi Kondakhishvili, lawyer of one of the leaders of the “United National Movement,” Levan Khabeishvili believes he was arrested for making a political statement.
As Kondakhishvili told journalists after visiting Khabeishvili in the State Security Service building, Levan Khabeishvili’s offer to police officers still stands.
“I visited Levan Khabeishvili and will pass on his words: he is a politician who was arrested for a political statement. He was detained because he had faith in victory, and they did not want this faith to spread among the people. He says the struggle must continue to the end. He has the same ‘message’ to all employees of the law enforcement agencies. The offer still stands: those police officers who carry out their duties conscientiously, who refuse to follow illegal orders to use violence, and who take the side of the people, will be rewarded with a solid financial bonus by the future government. This is Levan’s testament and his ‘message’: the fight until the end. Levan’s words are that he was arrested for making a political statement. The charge, which includes an alleged offer of a bribe, is absurd. A government that came with the ‘message’: 5 million for each village, is now imprisoning Levan for a promise he made as a politician, as a representative of the future government, to law enforcement officers for performing their duties in good faith,” said Kondakhishvili.
The lawyer also added that Khabeishvili has no injuries and, moreover, that “the employees of the law enforcement agencies have a positive attitude toward him.”
“He has no injuries and, moreover, he notes that in personal conversations there is a very positive atmosphere in the detention facilities. The law enforcement officers themselves understand that such a thing — to arrest a politician for political statements and wrap it up as if it were an offer of a bribe — has never happened. A positive attitude is felt, because according to him, everyone understands that this government’s days are numbered and there is faith in victory among the people. This faith in victory must not be lost, and in his words, everyone must face October 4 with the same determination,” Kondakhishvili stated.
