**Georgia’s Next Prosecutor General: Giorgi Gvarakidze Nominated**

On June 17, the Prosecutorial Council of Georgia nominated Giorgi Gvarakidze as a candidate for the country’s next prosecutor general. This decision is set to be submitted to the Georgian Dream parliament for approval.

The position has been vacant since Giorgi Gabitashvili was appointed as chief auditor on June 11, following his nomination on June 4. Gabitashvili was sanctioned by the UK and Estonia, which led to his new role.

Gvarakidze’s nomination comes after a legislative change on June 12 scrapped the requirement for consultations with civil society groups, academics, and legal experts in selecting nominees. The revised law now leaves this authority with the Prosecutorial Council.

**Who is Giorgi Gvarakidze?**

Giorgi Gvarakidze has served in Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office since 2003. He was appointed as first deputy prosecutor general on June 4, following Gabitashvili’s nomination. In May, he became Tbilisi prosecutor, replacing Levan Gegechkori, who was sanctioned by Lithuania.

Gvarakidze also has experience with the Special Investigative Service, where he served as the deputy head of the special affairs investigation department from 2024-2025.

**Support from Georgian Dream**

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed support for Gvarakidze’s candidacy, describing him as “distinguished by the high level of professionalism.” Kobakhidze hopes that Gvarakidze will obtain the vote of confidence from the parliament and serve with integrity to protect the rule of law in Georgia.

**What’s Next?**

The nomination is now set to be submitted to the Georgian Dream parliament for approval. If approved, Giorgi Gvarakidze would become the next prosecutor general of Georgia.
