Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia was attacked at a hotel in Batumi. He spoke about the incident for the first time.
Gakharia said that on January 15, he was met by a group of people as he entered the Sheraton Hotel. They had been shouting insults and obscenities. The attackers had also filmed everything with their phones. Gakharia claims they moved to make sure he saw they were armed.
When I saw what they were doing, I served them with my coffee in a paper cup,” Gakharia said. “But then they physically assaulted me as a group.” He lost consciousness and was helped by paramedics.
Gakharia is accusing former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili of ordering the attack. He says that Ivanishvili has been threatening him for a long time and wants to make sure he loses his power and money.
Gakharia said, “I am not focused on who carried out this violent attack. I am focused on the person behind it – Bidzina Ivanishvili.”
He also accused some television channels of not investigating the case fairly. Gakharia says that footage from surveillance cameras disappeared and pressure was put on hotel staff to destroy video materials.
Gakharia is promising to fight against what he calls “terror” and “evil”. He wants to ensure that Ivanishvili loses his power and money.
