I have met with Juansher Burchuladze once or twice, but I would never thought that such a large corruption system was set up and that all this revolved around him – let’s see what the position of the defense is, let’s see what the court decides, the investigation will show everything, – the First Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, Gia Volski, said in response to the arrest of the former Minister of Defense, Juansher Burchuladze.
According to him, the arrest of Burchuladze in the corruption case is “a very bad fact”, but “it would be even worse if you hide and do not present the reality that exists”.
According to Volski, strict measures should be taken regarding corruption.
“It’s a very bad fact. I have met with Juansher Burchuladze once or twice, but I would never thought that such a large corruption system was set up and that all this revolved around him. It’s a very bad fact. In general, it’s a bad fact for us too, but it would be even worse to hide and not present the reality that exists. The topic of corruption, no matter how it is analyzed, no matter from which angle it is evaluated, is extremely important for the country. That is why Georgia is among the leading countries in the world in terms of the fight against corruption. This crime can destroy any country. Whether it is in the past or in the present, all this must be strictly controlled, evaluated, and strict measures must be taken. Let’s see what decision the court will make, let’s see what position the defense has. The investigation will show everything. We must not allow anyone to have any suspicions about an attempt to cover up a crime,” Volski said.
When asked whether former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili could also be arrested, Volski replied that he could not imagine Gharibashvili being involved in any crime.
“I cannot imagine that Irakli Gharibashvili could be involved in any crime. I have known Irakli Gharibashvili for a long time. He was young, quite wealthy himself, his family had a fairly significant income, so I would be very surprised, I cannot allow that he could be involved in any corruption system. There is generally such a formula that “you should not rule out anything,” but we are human beings, we have our weaknesses and we may rule some things out anyway. Let’s see, in any case, whoever it is, any person who opposes the state with such an evil crime as corruption, everyone will be held accountable,” Volski said.
