**Germany’s Coalition Government Calls on Georgian Dream to Stop Disinformation and Hostile Rhetoric**

The new coalition government in Germany has called on the Georgian Dream (GD) government to halt disinformation campaigns, abandon hostile rhetoric towards the European Union, and stop verbal attacks against German Ambassador Peter Fischer. This comes after a series of escalating tensions between the two governments.

According to an official statement from the German Foreign Ministry, Germany is “concerned” about the increasing hostility and has urged the GD government to realign with European values and stop undermining the EU’s credibility. The statement emphasized that attacks against the German ambassador are “unacceptable.”

**Escalating Tensions**

The tensions escalated following comments made by Ambassador Fischer in an interview with InterpressNews on May 9. Fischer expressed Germany’s concern over Georgia’s democratic backsliding and distancing from the European Union in key areas such as the rule of law, human rights, and democratic governance.

In response to Fischer’s remarks, Gia Volski, First Vice Speaker of the GD Parliament, accused the ambassador of knowingly denying the existence of a “deep state” and claimed that Fischer himself was part of it. Volski also accused Germany of applying double standards in its international policies.

**President Zurabishvili Weighs In**

President Salome Zurabishvili weighed in on May 15, stating that the reaction from Berlin was a “very strict” message from Germany’s new administration. She emphasized that attacks against Germany and its representative are utterly unacceptable and only serve to deepen Georgia’s isolation.

**Not the First Time**

This is not the first time that the Georgian Dream has attacked the German ambassador. In February 2025, the GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze slammed Fischer, declaring that “Germany does not have an ambassador in Georgia today. They have a representative in the radical opposition.”
