**Georgia’s Population Reaches 3.91 Million, Shows Preliminary Census Results**
The National Statistics Office (Geostat) of Georgia has released the preliminary results of the 2024 census, which puts the country’s population at 3.91 million. This number is over 200,000 higher than the final count in the 2014 census, which stood at 3.71 million.
The census was conducted from November 14 to December 31, 2024, covering all of Georgia except for the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. The survey included Georgian citizens permanently residing in the country, as well as foreigners and stateless persons living in Georgia. However, Geostat did not clarify the minimum residency period required for foreigners to be counted in the data.
The fieldwork for the general population census was initially supposed to be completed on December 19 but continued until December 31 due to some residents of Tbilisi refusing to open their doors to interviewers “due to various circumstances.” This coincided with ongoing pro-European protests in the capital, which were met with violent nighttime dispersals by police.
**Demographics: Women Make Up 53% of Population**
According to the preliminary census results, women make up 53% (2.08 million) of Georgia’s population, while men account for 47% (1.83 million).
The most populous area remains Tbilisi, with a whopping 1.33 million residents, which accounts for 34% of Georgia’s total population. Outside the capital city, the Imereti region has the largest population, with 505,500 residents, or 12.9% of the total.
