**Protests Outside Parliament as Georgian Dream Leaders Meet**

On February 4, the Georgian parliament met for its spring session amidst protests outside the building. The only item on the agenda was a speech by President Mikheil Kavelashvili to party MPs.

Journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli’s imprisonment and hunger strike were the focus of the protests. Demonstrators, including media representatives, rallied in solidarity with Amaghlobeli. Two people were seen being arrested after protesters moved to block MP cars entering the building courtyard.

Despite not blocking traffic or standing on the sidewalk, police pushed back protesters and forced them to move to Rustaveli Avenue in front of parliament. Some media representatives, including a photographer and editor-in-chief, were allegedly attacked by police during this time.

**Kavelashvili’s Speech**

President Kavelashvili addressed his legitimacy and that of the October 26 elections, which are disputed by opposition parties. He claimed that forces against Georgia will have to accept its choice as majority of Georgians.

Kavelashvili also criticized European partners for “double standards” and an “unfair attitude” towards Georgia. He expressed satisfaction with Donald Trump’s election as US president and claimed the two share values.

The GD president addressed his pardon of 613 inmates, citing a need to balance humanism and civil security. He promoted healthy lifestyles and sports, saying they should unite society against polarization.

**Parliament’s Spring Session**

Several repressive bills initiated by the Georgian Dream will become law soon. The parliament will also discuss creating a commission to investigate “systemic crimes” of the former government. This move is seen as an attempt to ban opposition parties.

The opposition has not recognized the results of the October 26 elections and continues to boycott parliamentary work.
