Lithuanian Diplomat on Sanctions Against Georgian Dream
Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Tbilisi and spoke to the press. He was asked about the reactions of representatives from the party Georgian Dream, who said that sanctions imposed by Baltic countries “mean nothing”.
Landsbergis said he is surprised by this reaction. According to him, there is political symbolism in these sanctions. Lithuania, along with Estonia and Latvia, proposed and implemented the sanctions first. Landsbergis stated that this shows it’s possible for smaller countries to make a bigger impact than larger ones.
Germany later joined the sanctions, showing that the idea works. Landsbergis compared this to demonstrations in Europe, where people demand justice and get some of what they want, even if not all of it. He believes that speaking out against something means it bothers you, and that dictators are particularly sensitive to criticism.
