**Russia Suspected in Series of Sabotage Across Europe**
In a disturbing trend, Russia has been accused of orchestrating a string of sabotage incidents across Europe, sparking concerns about the country’s intentions towards the continent. From arson attacks to assassination plots and parcel fires, these incidents have raised tensions between Russia and Europe.
According to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, there have been around 100 “suspicious incidents” in Europe since last year, with many suspected of being linked to Russia. The incidents include a series of undersea cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea, which has affected critical infrastructure such as power and telecommunications cables.
One notable incident was the massive fire that destroyed the Marywilska shopping center in Warsaw, Poland, on May 12, 2024. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed that Russian intelligence services were behind the sabotage. Two Ukrainians were among those involved in the group acting on behalf of Russia and have been detained.
In Lithuania, authorities suspect Russia’s intelligence services of orchestrating arson attacks on an IKEA warehouse in Vilnius, which caused estimated damage of 500,000 euros ($545,000). The Lithuanian prosecutor’s office alleges that Russia’s military intelligence (GRU) formed a special group to carry out arson attacks across Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia.
The Czech Republic has also been affected, with a failed arson attack on Prague buses in March 2024. In the UK, several citizens have been charged with an arson plot against a Ukrainian-linked business in London after being recruited by Russian intelligence. The attackers targeted two sites at an industrial estate owned by British-Ukrainian Mykhailo Boikov and his wife.
In another instance, six Bulgarian nationals were sentenced to prison terms for operating a Russian espionage network in Britain. Orlin Roussev, the ringleader, was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months for conducting six espionage operations that threatened U.K. national security.
The most recent incident involved parcel fires at DHL-operated airport hubs in Germany and the UK, with packages arriving from Lithuania and disguised as electric massagers containing incendiary devices. German authorities have accused three Ukrainian nationals of participating in a separate, allegedly Russian-backed plot to send out parcels with explosives across Europe.
These incidents have sparked concerns about Russia’s intentions towards Europe and its willingness to use sabotage and espionage to achieve its goals. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Europe will respond to these challenges.
