**France Reminds Russia to Respect Georgia’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity**
Seventeen years have passed since Russia’s aggression against Georgia, but the wounds of war still linger. To commemorate this somber anniversary, France is calling on Russia to respect its commitments under a landmark EU-mediated agreement.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), French Ambassador to Georgia Sheraz Gasri emphasized the importance of upholding Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Remembering the victims of Russia’s 2008 war of aggression against Georgia,” the ambassador wrote, “we reiterate France’s call on Russia to respect Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and implement its commitments under EU-mediated 6 points agreement.”
The EU-mediated 6 points agreement was signed in 2008 as a ceasefire between Georgian and Russian forces. The accord aimed to stabilize the situation in the South Caucasus region, but Russia has failed to fully comply with many of its provisions.
As France joins other international partners in reminding Russia of its responsibilities, it’s essential to understand the significance of this anniversary. In August 2008, Russia launched a military operation against Georgia, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and significant damage to the country’s infrastructure.
The international community must continue to pressure Russia to adhere to its commitments under the 6 points agreement. This includes respect for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian territories.
France’s call on Russia is a timely reminder that the world will not forget or forgive such aggression. It’s time for Russia to take concrete steps towards rebuilding trust with its international partners and upholding the principles of peace and stability in the region.
