**Georgia’s Foreign Ministry Sounds the Alarm on Russia’s Actions in Abkhazia**

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has issued a statement expressing its deep concern over the illegal operation of the Sokhumi Airport by Russia. The airport, located in the occupied region of Abkhazia, has seen air traffic resume after years of being closed.

This move is seen as a gross violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. According to the Ministry, the resumption of air traffic by a Russian airline on May 1, 2025, along with an agreement between Russia and the occupation regime in Abkhazia to transfer control of the airport to Russia, are clear breaches of international law.

**A History of Disregard for International Norms**

The Ministry’s statement highlights that this is not the first time Russia has ignored international norms. The implementation of rail traffic from Russia to occupied Abkhazia on May 1, 2018, was also met with concern by Georgia’s Foreign Ministry.

“This is a pattern of behavior that shows Russia’s disregard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia,” says a senior official at the Ministry. “We urge the international community to take notice and respond appropriately.”

**Calling on Russia to Respect International Obligations**

The statement from Georgia’s Foreign Ministry calls on Russia to fulfill its international obligations, including those outlined in the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the Ceasefire Agreement of August 12, 2008. These agreements were concluded with the mediation of the European Union.

“This is not just a matter of concern for Georgia, but also for the entire international community,” says the official. “We expect Russia to respect its obligations and refrain from further actions that undermine our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

**The International Community Must Act**

As the situation in Abkhazia continues to deteriorate, the Ministry emphasizes the need for the international community to take action. The statement urges countries around the world to properly assess and respond to Russia’s actions.

“Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are not just our concerns, but also those of the entire international community,” says the official. “We expect the international community to stand with us in this matter.”
