**Slovak PM Accuses Opposition Leader of Trying to Stage a Coup**
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has accused opposition leader Michal Simecka of trying to stage a coup in the country. This comes after Simecka visited Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
**Visit to Ukraine**
Simecka, who leads the Progressive Slovakia party, was part of a delegation of Slovak opposition MPs that visited Kyiv on January 17. The visit aimed to “reopen the door” that Fico had slammed shut with his aggressive outbursts. However, Fico has now accused Simecka and the opposition of trying to stage a coup.
**Fico’s Accusations**
In an address posted on Facebook, Fico said that the opposition was “kissing Zelensky’s ring” and promising him support for Ukraine’s NATO membership. He also compared their actions to the EuroMaidan revolution in Ukraine, which led to a change of government.
**Tensions Mount**
Fico has been escalating threats against Ukraine since Russia stopped gas transit through Ukrainian territory on January 1. He has threatened to limit aid to Ukrainians and cut off electricity supplies amid an energy crisis brought on by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s power grid.
**Talks Possible**
Despite the tensions, Zelensky and Fico have signaled that they may hold talks in the coming days. Fico told reporters that he might meet with Zelensky at an unspecified location, while Zelensky invited Fico to visit Kyiv.
