EU’s Top Diplomat Pushes for Direct Use of Russian Funds
The European Union’s new top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, says Ukraine has a legitimate claim for compensation. She believes the EU should use billions in frozen Russian state funds to help Ukraine.
The EU currently uses profits from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. However, it hasn’t seized the entire €210 billion held in the bloc due to legal concerns. The EU controls more than two-thirds of Russia’s $300 billion sovereign assets frozen by Western allies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kallas sees the frozen Russian assets as a tool to pressure Russia. She thinks Ukraine should get direct compensation from these funds. This would help the country with its ongoing support and recovery efforts.
