**West Must Double Down on Sanctions Enforcement to Hit Russia Hard**
In the face of Russia’s latest brutal attack on Kyiv, which killed at least 32 civilians, President Donald Trump has threatened to extend sanctions on those who enable the war effort. While slapping new sanctions on India and China will undoubtedly put pressure on Russia, it is essential that the West also doubles down on enforcing existing restrictions.
**Closing Loopholes in Sanctions**
Russia’s ability to evade sanctions is a significant concern. The country has developed sophisticated networks of shell companies and shadow fleets to acquire restricted technology and materials. To prevent this, there must be greater harmonization between US, UK, and EU sanctions. This will require more resources, investment in innovation, and the political will to punish those responsible.
**Using Technology to Enhance Enforcement**
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a crucial role in enhancing enforcement by spotting suspicious behavior patterns in financial transaction data. This would make it easier and cheaper to identify criminals and prevent them from evading sanctions.
**A Cost-Effective Approach**
Restricting Russia’s access to funds and military hardware is a less costly way to give Ukraine the upper hand on the battlefield than simply supplying more kit. By closing off back channels for military components, exposing the “shadow fleet,” and beefing up enforcement bodies, the West can hold Putin’s feet to the fire.
**A Welcome Step**
President Trump’s threat of new, secondary sanctions is a welcome step towards putting pressure on Russia. However, it is essential that this is accompanied by more direct measures such as export quotas for transit countries, improved intelligence sharing, and diplomatic pressure.
**Conclusion**
The West has an opportunity to press home its economic advantages and undermine Russia’s military capacity. By doubling down on sanctions enforcement, the West can hit Russia hard where it hurts most – in its economy. It is time to close loopholes, use technology to enhance enforcement, and take a cost-effective approach to giving Ukraine the upper hand.
