**Russia Launches Massive Drone Attack on Ukraine, Damaging Infrastructure and Lives**
On the night of May 20, Russia launched a massive drone attack against Ukraine, deploying 108 Shahed-type attack drones and various decoy unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian air defenses were able to neutralize 93 of these drones by 9:00 am.
**Ukrainian Air Defenses Show Strength**
The attack was met with fierce resistance from Ukrainian air defenders. They shot down 35 UAVs using firepower, while another 58 were lost due to electronic warfare countermeasures without causing damage. This shows the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense systems and their ability to protect its citizens.
**Damage Reported in Four Oblasts**
The attack damaged infrastructure in four Ukrainian oblasts: Donetsk, Dnipro, Sumy, and Zhytomyr. In Dnipro Oblast, drone strikes caused fires and destruction at a farm and an enterprise in Synelnykivskyi district and Pavlohrad district accordingly.
**Nikopol Under Attack Again**
Russian forces also targeted the Nikopol area with drones and artillery, affecting Nikopol itself and the surrounding communities of Pokrovska, Myrivska, and Marhanets. This is not the first time that Nikopol has been under attack by Russian forces, who have frequently used artillery and kamikaze drones to target the city.
**Casualties Reported in Donetsk and Kherson Oblasts**
In just the past 24 hours, Russian shelling and attacks on Donetsk Oblast injured 6 people and killed one person in Bakhmut district. In Kherson Oblast, Russian attacks injured five people. These attacks also damaged multiple residential buildings, garages, enterprises, and private cars.
**Commentary and Deeper Analysis**
This massive drone attack by Russia is a clear indication of their continued aggression against Ukraine. The fact that Ukrainian air defenses were able to neutralize 93 out of 108 drones shows the effectiveness of their systems and their determination to protect their citizens.
The repeated targeting of Nikopol, in particular, highlights the Russian strategy to weaken and destabilize key cities in Ukraine. The attacks on Donetsk and Kherson Oblasts also demonstrate the continued aggression by Russian forces against Ukrainian civilians.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that Ukraine will need continued support from its international partners to defend itself against these attacks.
