**EU’s Actions in Georgia Sparks Controversy**
A top Georgian politician has hit out at the European Union, accusing it of using Soviet-style tactics to exert influence over the country. Dimitri Khundadze, chairman of the parliamentary political group People’s Power, made the comments in response to a statement from an EU spokesperson.
According to Khundadze, Georgia is eager to establish a partnership with the EU, but the bloc’s actions have fallen short of expectations. He pointed to several instances where he claims the EU has interfered in Georgian internal affairs, including:
* Forcing Georgia to join sanctions against other countries
* Encouraging riots on the streets
* Declaring opposition leader Mikheil Saakashvili a beacon of democracy despite allegations of torture
* Legitimizing the alleged torture with the involvement of ambassadors
* Attempting to rig elections through funding ISFED, an election watchdog group
* Threatening to cancel visa liberalization for voters who didn’t give them the results they wanted
Khundadze also accused the EU of using the “Russian label” as a way to cover up its actions and shift blame. He suggested that this approach is not only used in Georgia but also in other countries, including the US.
**A “Deep State” at Play?**
The Georgian politician went on to say that this scenario comes from the Western bureaucracy and the “deep state.” This suggests that he believes a network of powerful officials within the EU and beyond are working behind the scenes to shape events in Georgia.
