EU Not Happy with Georgia’s Government

The European Union is not happy with Georgia’s government. They think the government is moving too close to Russia and not following EU rules.

David McAllister, a top official in the European Parliament, said this in an interview. He said that until the Georgian government changes its ways, relations between them must be downgraded.

The European Union has stopped sending money to Georgia because of this issue. They were supposed to send €121 million, but now that’s on hold.

McAllister wants the EU to stop helping the Georgian government with money and partnerships. Instead, he thinks this money should go to help civil society groups, like non-governmental organizations and independent media.

The goal is to protect these groups from the government’s actions. McAllister said that democratic change must come from the people themselves.

He also called on the Georgian authorities to hold free and fair elections, release all political prisoners, and stop putting innocent people in prison.
