**US Imposes Sanctions on Georgian Politician**
Two US congressmen have welcomed the decision to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, chairman of Georgia’s ruling party. Congressman Gerry Connolly and Congressman Mike Turner issued a joint statement.
They said the sanctions were necessary because Ivanishvili has been undermining Georgia’s future as part of the Euro-Atlantic community. They claimed that under his leadership, Georgia was becoming more like Russia’s one-party system.
The congressmen pointed out several examples of what they called Ivanishvili’s authoritarian tactics. These included passing a law that restricts free speech, using violence against protesters, and delaying negotiations to join the European Union.
