**Manx Bomb Disposal Specialist Dies in Ukraine**
Chris Garrett, a highly skilled bomb disposal specialist from the Isle of Man, has lost his life while serving with the Ukraine National Guard. The 40-year-old was severely injured in an incident near Izyum, eastern Ukraine, on Tuesday.
Garrett had been working with Prevail Together, a charity he co-founded to provide training and assistance to troops fighting in Ukraine. Three workers from the charity were critically injured in the same incident, with two later passing away. The devastating news has left the community in shock.
**A Devoted Volunteer**
Chris Garrett was no stranger to danger. He had previously served in Ukraine between 2014 and 2017, helping to clear mines and unexploded ordnance in Crimea. After the war broke out in February 2022, he returned to the country to continue his work, this time focusing on raising awareness about explosives and training troops how to mitigate risks.
Garrett’s colleagues described him as a dedicated volunteer who had spent countless hours traveling to Ukraine to help those in need. “He was an exceptional individual with a strong sense of duty,” said Shaun Pinner, board member of Prevail Together.

Throughout his life, Garrett had always put others before himself. His decision to return to Ukraine, despite the risks involved, was a testament to his dedication to serving others. As he told the BBC in 2022, “I’ve been here before, I’ve had the shelling, I’ve had the shooting. I’ve had some pretty close calls in the country.” Yet, he continued to serve, aware that he could make a difference by training others.
