Regarding the events of October 4, Boris Chele Kurua, the lawyer of the arrested Mikheil Toloraia, stated that his client was detained by a special police unit in his home in the presence of his young child.
Toloraia is currently held at the temporary detention facility in Zaheds. At this time, no formal charges have been filed against him.
“He was at his residence. His arrest was carried out through a special police operation, with weapons and a SWAT team raiding the home of a man who was not hiding or fleeing. He has a young child at home, who witnessed Toloraia being handcuffed and taken away. He has no expectation of finding justice in this court; he expects the judge will disregard everything and impose pretrial detention. No charges have been officially filed yet, but he is presumably being accused of attempting to seize a strategic facility and participating in group violence.
Mikheil Toloraia is an honest, hardworking person who has never been in conflict with the law,” Kurua said.
For context, several activists were arrested in connection with the events of October 4. Among those detained are Mariam Mekanshishvili, Davit Giunashvili, Simon Makharadze, Davit Ghurtskaia, Giorgi Talakhadze, Gia Toloraia, Mikheil Toloraia, and Temur Kurtsikidze.
